Ask someone to picture a fatal fall in a national park and they will picture a cliff edge, a person too close to the rim, a photograph gone wrong, a dramatic and cinematic mistake.

The record is less dramatic and considerably more useful. Falls in parks cluster in specific, predictable circumstances, and almost none of them involve the situations visitors are most afraid of.

Developed overlooks with railings produce their own pattern, because a barrier signals safety and people behave accordingly, sitting on rails, climbing past them for an unobstructed photograph, letting children move independently in a way they would not on open ground.

The demographic pattern surprises people. Serious falls skew toward experienced, physically capable adults rather than the frail or the obviously unprepared.

The explanation is exposure rather than ability. Confident hikers go further, into more consequential terrain, later in the day, and more often in conditions that turn marginal. A visitor who walks a paved rim trail for twenty minutes has almost no exposure to the situations that produce serious falls.

Time of day tracks the same pattern. Incidents concentrate in late afternoon and early evening, when parties that started late are still descending, temperatures have peaked, water has run low, and the light is flattening in a way that hides the texture of the ground.

Footwear and the underrated variable

Trail-running shoes and worn hiking boots both perform badly on wet rock. Sole compound and tread depth matter more than ankle height, and most people replace boots long after the tread has stopped doing anything.

The guidance is consistent across units and unglamorous: carry more water than you expect to need, turn around based on time rather than distance, stay on designated trails, and treat wet rock as ice.

Where Legal Responsibility Sits, and Where It Does Not
